John went home today around noon.  He has to get an antibiotic through his IV three times a day until Wednesday.  He and Dinki will be travelling to NY on Sunday and come back home late in the week.  Please pray for a safe journey and a wall of protection around them as they travel.

We received some test results from John's blood tests and he has a germ causing his fever. While the lab has not fully identified the germ, they expect to in the next day or two. John will be in the hospital through at least Thursday. His spirits are pretty low, but he has his bright moments and we savor those.

Please pray that the lab could quickly identify the germ so they can determine what specific antibiotic to use. Depending on the antibiotic, he will have to get it intravenously three times a day or one time a day. We are praying he will be able to travel to MSKCC to get the tests he needs to determine the next treatments.

We took John in around 5:00pm on Sunday evening becuase his fever had gotten very high.  He is doing pretty good so far and they do not yet know the cause if the fever, but has gone down and is staying down.  We are praying that he can go home tomorrow.

Next week (June 4 - 8) we are scheduled to return to MSKCC to have a series of tests run on John.  Tuesday and Wednesday the following tests will determine his progression from his sixth chemo treatments:

If all these test results show John to be disease free, then we will likely be back up MSKCC the week of June 18 for this first 3F8 antibody treatments.  These 3F8 treatments will be given over a weeks time and will be one once a month at MSKCC for the next six months or longer.  Radiation therapy is also planned after John begins his 3F8 treatments.

John is running a temperature and is getting close to the level that will requires us to take him to the hospital.  We need our prayer warriors to come forth and fight against the enemy and take this feaver away from John and the infection or other source causing it.  Please join with us in lifting John up before the throne of Jesus. Thank you

The latter part of the week has been somewhat uneventful. John’s counts have continued to drop. On Saturday, he had to have platelets. He’s still been struggling with mouth sores and pain in his esophagus which makes eating a challenge. He’s been eating Mommy’s home cooking as much as he can, though. His oncologist really wants him to gain weight. Today, he’s been teetering on the edge of a fever. Please pray he will remain well.

5/23/07

John has been doing pretty well this week, but he has had some mouth sores and had to get a blood transfusion yesterday.  He and his brothers are enjoying each other's company.  Please pray for the sores in his mouth and for him to stay well.

You prayer warriors continue to amaze me. I believe John's fever dissipated because of the many prayers you submitted to God. Thank you!!! We aren't out of the woods yet. John's counts should take their biggest nose dive on Monday. We will guard him well, all the while, knowing God is in control.

John is thriving at home. He ate breakfast before we left the hospital on Friday morning. You have to understand. He had not eaten breakfast or lunch all week. He, also, ate a large lunch and a substantial supper last night. Late yesterday afternoon, we realized he had not had a dose of his anti-nausea medicine since very early in the morning. This medicine is given every four hours. Suffice to say, the boy had made it all day, eating heartily, without meds. God is great and greatly to be praised!

Our Friday night Family Night was one we will relish for quite some time. We have much to be thankful for, much to celebrate, and just thoroughly enjoyed being together. It's the simple things in life that matter the most. We are learning this the hard way. I pray each of you will enjoy the relationships in your life even if it's just being in the same room reminiscing. John has truly taught us Mark 10:15. "Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” (NKJV)

The web site has often attested to John's strength. And his strength comes from the Lord. When we were in NY this last time, and I had just heard the news of the possibility of having a sixth treatment, I began to weep. John looked me square in the eye and said, "Don't start!" He won't let me cry anymore. He only wants to get done what he needs to get done. He doesn't dwell on what will be. He faces the day for what it is and presses forward. As a parent, this is hard. At times, I feel like I have let him down. My strength is coming through John. He is a precious little boy. I wish all of you could sit beside him as he faces each new battle. I begin to, verbally, prepare him for the next phase. And he looks at me and says, "Mom, I know. Let's do it." I choke back the tears and remember Paul. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14 (NKJV)

May we all enter each day with childlike faith and press on toward God's call; not our own.

Love,
DINKI

We were all prepared to go home yesterday about 4:00p and John developed a fever of 101.  After consulting with the medical team, it was determined that it was safest for John if he stayed the night.  His fever quickly dissiapated and was gone by 9:00p and has not returned.  We're heading home this morning and can't wait to be back in our own house and beds.

Thanks for all the prayers and encouragement during John's continued treatments.

Hey there. Sorry it's been a few days on the web. Here's the latest on John and the rest of us.

John checked in to CMC (Carolinas Medical Center) Monday afternoon. We had a short visit to the clinic before admitting. Fortunately, the clinic is just down the hall at the hospital on the same floor as the room he stays overnight in. Blood counts were all good. All systems go.

John needed the usual six to eight hours of hydration before we could start his chemo treatment. Shortly after midnight, his sixth cycle began. His spirits are good, but his tummy is questionable. He threw up twice yesterday. However, he was able to eat Mommy's potato soup for supper last night and held it down. Yeah! He definitely does not like the hospital food.

We had a few visitors yesterday and some today. We love seeing you guys. It really makes John happy. NY is great for its care, but you just can't duplicate friends. We are blessed beyond measure to have such an amazing support group! Thanks to all of you.

John will possibly go home Thursday around 3:00p and be done with this cycle. We'll see how he is progressing tomorrow.

George slept over at the hospital last night and James is sleeping with John tonight.  They so love their little brother and want to support him in any way they can.  Dinki and I usually alternate nights, but sometime he wants "mommy" a couple of nights in a row so daddy has to go home to sleep.

It has been good to be back home these last two weeks and we hope to be home at least two or three more weeks before we have to return to NY.

It's been a great week home with John and a nice Mother's day.  We were able to attend church together as a family with John for the first time in a couple of months.  We were blessed by the teaching we received.

John is going to get a sixth chemo treament here in Charlotte at CMC strating Monday afternoon (5/14).  He will be in the hospital for about five days.

Happy Birthday James and Dad!

This Friday, our middle son James and I (Rick) will celebrate our birthdays together.  James was born on my birthday, May 11, and was the best birthday present any dad could hope for.  He will turn nine on Friday and I will turn a year older

James has such a compassionate heart for his brother and has told me on more than one occasion that he would like to take John's cancer away and give it to himself so John did not have to suffer any more.  In Febrary of this year James sold his aquarium on eBay and raised close to $400 to assist with John's medical expenses.

We are planning to have a special birthday celebration this Saturday, May 12.  This will be a very informal open house/play time from 10:00a - 12:00p for James and Rick.  If you want to drop by our house at anypoint between those hours, please feel free, we'd love to have any and all visitors, as long as you are in good health.  Click here for what we consider good health.

James is trying to save all his Birthday money to buy one large gift, but he hasn't decided what it will be yet

Last night at 9:00 pm, one of the doctor's from the Neuroblastoma Team at Sloan-Kettering called. All, but one, of the results from John's tests last Thursday and Friday are back. The only one we are waiting on is the aspirates. He said the results "look pretty good." The CTs look good. The MIBG test only had a small "uptake in the abdomen" which they believe is where the tumor was. There is no trace of Neuroblastoma cells in John's spine, pelvis, and bones. He, also, has a clear bone marrow test. They are "really pleased with the findings." There is "dramatic improvement!" Most of you know, Thursday, December 14, 2006, was when we got the results from the first MIBG scan. John had cells in his spine, pelvic bone, and an ocular bone. He was diagnosed at stage IV. The "dramatic improvement" is the comparison of his first MIBG scan to this one (his second scan). The chemo has worked to eradicate the Neuroblastoma cells in John's body.

Being that this was John's first "clean" bone marrow test, the Team wants him to have a sixth cycle of chemo. What we understand them to say is this. If a patient has two clean bone marrows in a row, then he/she does not need the sixth chemo. John has only had one clean test result; this last one. So, John will have a sixth chemo. We have yet to determine if it will be done here in NC or in NY. The doctor that called last night sounded favorable to it being done here. We'll know more when Rick talks to this particular doctor.

Please join us in praising God for his favor on John's behalf. We have continued to praise Him all day. When I told James the good news this morning, he wept tears of joy. He threw his arms around me and said, "We're almost done with this cancer!" Boy, how I wish that was true. Now, our challenge is in telling the boys how this cancer can come back. Oh, we can get rid of it. Yet, somehow it comes back. There are many children who relapse. We will pray fervently that it never comes back, but only God knows if it will. Here's what one mom (Kim Malarkey) states on her son's Caring Bridge web site:
"But we must be wary of this sneaky disease. Thousands of cells can be hiding and scans show NED. Please continue to pray for a real cure, as there is none for NB. We are all just "Living with Cancer" as David Adamson says. The operative word is "LIVING" as we must live each and every day to its FULLEST while continuing to fight! (Parents of NB kids pray they can remain NED for 5 years as then there is good promise for a lengthy life here on earth.)"

As a dear friend, Esther Reilly, battled a severe cancer just a couple of years ago, she said, "My days are not numbered by an illness, but by the Lord." How right she is! Matthew 6:27 (KJV) states: Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? Only the Living God of the Universe knows the number of John's days; for that matter, all of our days. Join us in prayer for John to have many more days with us here on this earth. And while we are fighting for John's life and waiting on Him, may we glorify our Lord in all we say and do. We should live life with our eyes on His Kingdom every moment of every day.

Loving you,
DINKI

The last few days John has done wonderful.  We have all enjoyed spending time as a family at our home.  We received a call late tonight from our oncologist at MSKCC and he said that he did not have all the results from last weeks test in yet, but the results he did have were a dramatic improvement from his previous MIBG test.  John appears to be doing wonderful in his battle against neuroblastoma.

John is going to require a sixth chemo treatment and we will decide tomorrow whether he will receive the treatment here in Charlotte or at MSKCC, as the treatment will be the same at either location.

Dinki & John made it back home safely around 3:00p today.  Corporate Angel did a great Job in getting them home on short notice.  the flight landed in Greensboro and we had a pleasant drive back to our home.  Dinki and John have been gone since April 9 and we are so happy to have them back with us. John will probably have to go back to New York on May 14, so we are going to cherish each day at home and continue to pray that he stays well and his tests come back as NED.

John's fever is fine and he is sleeping in his own bed for the first time in several weeks.

Father, thank you for being faithful to care for us through all that has been happening the past seven months.  Please give us the strength to endure the remaining treatments and work together as a family.

Teach us to look to you for our strength and guidance and not rely on our own strength.  We ask that you keep John well while he is at home and to allow him to have a normal week at our hous. You have once again proven yourself mighty and faithful on our behalf.

We love you Lord Jesus.

John made it through all his test and is doing fine.  We will not get the results until a week or so.  His fever is doing okay and all his blood counts are all dramatically improving.  Thanks for your prayers.

Two of John's tests came back negative for any problems:

  1. His audiogram showed no hearing loss
  2. His echocardiogram showed no heart damage

He continues to run a fever around 99.5, Dinki is monitoring him very closely.

Tomorrow at 9:30a he goes in for his MIBG, which is a scan of his whole body looking for any signs of the Neuroblastoma Cancer.  John is awake during this test and must lay extremely still for almost an hour.  The last time he had this test it was extremely uncomfortable for him.  Around noon time he will have the Bone marrow biopsy and aspirations (4 different locations) that will also help identify any remaining cancer cells.

Please join us in our prayers for the following:

  1. All of John's labs will come back with no evidence of disease (NED).
  2. John will be able to lie still and comfortably during the hour long MIBG.
  3. John's fever and the cause of it will go away.
  4. A safe trip for Dinki and John as they prepare to come home.  I will pick them up at the Greensboro airport Saturday afternoon at 12:30

Both Dinki and my heart's are breaking, as John has begun to develop a fever.  Right now it's at 99.5 but we are praying and entreating the Lord that the fever and whatever is causing the fever be taken away.  If his fever reaches 100.5, he has to check in to the hospital for a minimum of 48 hours, which means he probably can't get home this weekend.  He is also having issues with keeping food down, but he continues to try and eat, which is a good sign.

Please join us in praying John through this tough time.

Good News and Bad News.

Good News: John got off of his backpack of fluids. Yeah! He had an infusion of platelets Monday and will continue on his Neupogen shots until his next complete blood count (CBC) on Wednesday.

Bad News: Myself, George, and James left this morning and made it safely back our home in Charlotte. We had such a wonderful time together as a family. Hopefully, we will have more time together at home next week.

Prayer of thanksgiving:
Corporate Angel has secured a flight for Dinki and John to return home on Satruday.

Prayer needs:

  1. John to gain weight. He has dropped to 35 lbs. from 40 lbs.
  2. John has a series of tests on Thursday and Friday that will determine his progression from the last five chemo treatments.
    • CT SCAN
    • EKG
    • Audiogram to check for hearing loss due to chemotherapy
    • Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration (4 different locations) which are usually sore for several days after the procedure
    1. MIBG Bone scan, which can cause permanent damage to his Thyroid gland
It is our prayer that all the labs will come back with no evidence of disease (NED).
